La Giara di Gesturi
La Giara di Gesturi is a high basalt plateau famous for its wild horses. Also known as the Giara Park, it is a large plateau in central-southern Sardinia that is home to the Giara horses, the last wild horses in Europe. The best time to see wild horses is early morning or late afternoon, when the indigenous cavallini (ponies) come out to drink at the small lake called the Pauli Mauri. Approaching the Giara from Tuili, the road climbs in a series of steep switchbacks to a car park at the Giara's southernmost entrance. From here, a well-trodden trail leads to a small lake called the Pauli Mauri. This is one of several seasonal paulis (pools) on the Giara where you just might spot one of the area's indigenous cavallini (ponies) as they come out to drink.
Sardinia’s animal and plant world is truly fascinating: deer, rare birds and one of Europe’s last herds of wild horses roam free amongst the fragrant, colourful vegetation. National parks and protected areas preserve this natural wealth.
Sardinia is an island of the coast of Italy in the western meditteranean. Here are some great directions and photos of the wild horses: https://strictlysardinia.com/altopiano-della-giara-di-gesturi/
