Bitner Herd Management Area
​

Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 15-25; the estimated population for 2023 is 58

​The Bitner wild horse area can be found 40 miles east of Cedarville, CA. ​

Antelope Valley Complex 
​
Size: 399,761 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 150-324

​The Antelope Complex wild horse area can be found 50 miles northeast of Ely, NV​

Ash Meadows HMA
​
Size: 115,143 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 1 (yes, 1). The BLM does not manage this as a herd area, but states the area is used by horses moving from the nearby Delamar HMA

​The Ash Meadows wild horse area can be found 5 miles southwest of Caliente, NV

Augusta Mountains HMA
​
Size: 38,581 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 185-308

​The Augusta Mountains HMA can be found 75 miles southeast of Winnemucca, NV, in Churchill, Lander, and Pershing Counties. 

Bald Mountain HMA
​
Size: 139,875 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 129-215

​The Bald Mountain HMA can be found 45 miles southeast of Battle Mountain, NV, in Lander County. BLM counts the herd including movement from nearby HMAs including South Shoshone and Callaghan HMAs, of which boundaries are shared.

Black Rock Range East-West HMA
​
Size: 185,520 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 112-186

​The Black Rock Range East and West HMAs can be found 70 miles northwest of Winnemucca and 40 miles southwest of Denio, NV. Previously known as two separate HMAs, BLM states wild horses move between the two and therefore call it one HMA now.

Blue Wing Mountains HMA
​
Size: 17,913 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 27-36 and the number of burros is 17-28

​The Blue Wing Mountains HMA can be found 65 miles northeast of Reno, NV, in western Pershing County. ​

Butler Basin Wild Horse Territory
​
Size: 52,500 acres
Number of wild horses the Forest Service and BLM deem appropriate is 60 -100

Located in Nevada approximately 40 miles southwest of Eureka. The territory consists of 52,500 acres of National Forest land in the northern portion of the Monitor Mountain Range. It has been observed and documented that wild horses migrate freely between the Butler Basin WHT and Seven Mile HMA.  The two areas are managed for a combined appropriate management level of 60-100 horses. Buffalo Hills HMA

​The Augusta Mountains HMA can be found 70 miles north of Reno, NV, in central Washoe County. 

Burro Wild Burro Territory
​
Size: 23,700 acres of National Forest land and 64,300 acres of Bureau of Land Management land (Hickson Summit Herd Management Area).
Number of wild burros the Forest Service deems appropriate for the herd area is unknown

​Located in Nevada approximately 20 miles east of Austin on the northwestern portion of the Toquima Mountain Range.

Calico Mountains HMA

Size: 160,831 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 200-333

​The Calico Mountains HMA can be found 110 miles north of Reno, NV, in southwest Humboldt County and east central Washoe County. 

Callaghan HMA
​
Size: 156,156 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 134-237

​The Callaghan HMA can be found 6 miles north of Austin, NV, between Hwy 305 to the west and Grass Valley to the east. 

Cherry Spring Wild Horse Territory
​
Size: 23,794 acres
Number of wild horses the Forest Service deems appropriate for the herd area is 58

​Located in Nevada approximately 50 miles south of Elko. The territory lies on southern portion of the Ruby Mountain Range. It is bordered by Sherman Mountain on the north and Overland Pass on the south. It is flanked by Ruby Marsh on the east and Huntington Valley on the west. Read more here. 

Clan Alpine HMA

​The Clan Alpine HMA can be found 60 miles east of Fallon, NV, in the Clan Alpine Mountains. 

Desatoya HMA
​
Size: 161,678 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 127-180

Diamond HMA
​
Size: 166,632 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 91-151

​The Diamond HMA can be found east and north of Eureka, NV, in Eureka, White Pine, and Elko counties. 

Diamond Hills North and South HMA Complex
​
Size: 71,564 acres for the north and 20,082 for the south
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 22-37 for the North area and 10-22 for the south area

​The Diamond HMA can be found 40 miles south of Elko, NV in the Diamond Mountain Range. 

Dobbin Summit Wild Horse Territory
​
Size: 51,000 acres
Number of wild horses the Forest Service deems appropriate for the herd area is unknown

​Located in Nevada approximately 50 miles southwest of Eureka and lies in the middle of the Monitor Mountain Range. Read more here. 

Dogskin Mountains HMA

​The Dogskin Mountains HMA can be found 25 miles north of Reno, NV, east of Bedell Flat in the Dogskin Mountain Range 

Eagle HMA

Elsworth Wild Horse Territory
​

Fish Creek HMA
​
Size: 252,771 acres

​The Fish Creek HMA can be found a few miles south of Eureka, NV, in the Antelope and Little Smoky Valleys and the Antelope and Fish Creek Mountains. 230,000 acres of Fish Creek are south of Highway 50.​

Fish Lake Valley HMA

​The Fish Lake Valley HMA can be found west of Dyer, NV, in Esmeralda county. 

Flanigan HMA

Fort Sage HMA

Fox-Lake Range HMA

Garfield Flat HMA

Gold Butte HMA

Gold Mountain HMA

​The Gold Mountain HMA can be found west of Scotty's Junction/US Hwy 95, NV, in Nye and Esmeralda counties. 

Goldfield HMA

Goshute HMA

Granite Range HMA

Hickison Summit Burro Range

​The Jackson Mountains HMA can be found 60 miles northwest of Winnemuca, NV, in central Humboldt county.

Johnnie HMA
​
Size: 179,368 acres

​The Johnnie HMA can be found 60 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NV, in Clark and Nye counties. 

Kamma Mountains HMA
​
Size: 57,390 acres

​The Kamma Mountains HMA can be found 90 miles northeast of Reno, NV, in western Pershing county. 

Kelly Creek Wild Horse Territory
​
Size: 19,600 acres of Forest Service land and 35,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management land (North Monitor Herd Management Area)

Lahontan HMA
​
Size: 9,578 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 7-10

​The Diamond HMA can be found 35 miles east of Carson City, NV, and south of the Lahontan reservoir. 

Lava Beds HMA
​
Size: 233,000 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 89-148 and 10-16 wild burros

​The Lava Beds HMA can be found 70 miles northeast of Reno, NV, in western Pershing county. 

Little Fish Lake HMA and Wild Horse Territory
​
Size: 76,000 acres of Forest Service land and about 28,744 acres of Bureau of Land Management land
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 24-39, the Little Fishlake WHT is managed for 132 horses

​The Little Fish Lake HMA can be found 60 miles northeast of Tonopah, NV, approximately 50 miles southwest of Eureka.

Little Humboldt HMA
​
Size: 17,152 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 48-80

​The Little Humboldt HMA can be found 45 miles north of Winnemucca, NV, in western Elko county. This HMA is part of the Owyhee Complex which also includes the Little Owyhee, Owyhee, Rock Creek, and Snowstorm HMAs.

Little Owyhee HMA
​
Size: 460,284 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 194-298

​The Little Owyhee HMA can be found 40 miles northeast of Winnemucca, NV, in eastern Humboldt and western Elko counties. This HMA is part of the Owyhee Complex which also includes the Little Humboldt, Owyhee, Rock Creek, and Snowstorm HMAs.

Marietta Wild Burro Range
​
Size: 66,045 acres
Number of wild burros the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 78-184

​The Marietta Wild Burro Range can be found south of Hwy 95 near the California border, between the Garfield Flat and Montgomery Pass HMAs.

Maverick-Medicine HMA
​
Size: 323,562 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 166-276

​The Maverick-Medicine HMA can be found 75 miles southeast of Elko, NV. It is bordered on the west by the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge and on the east by the Cherry Creek Mountains. Look for High Bald Peak which is within the HMA.

McGavin Peak Wild Horse Territory
​
Size: 3,860 acres of Forest Service land, 1,860 acres of Bureau of Land Management land, and 10,325 acres of private land
Number of wild horses the Forest Service deems appropriate for the herd area is 0

​Located in California about 7 miles east of Dorris. Read more here.

McGee Mountain HMA
​
Size: 41,160 acres
Number of wild burros the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 25-41

​The McGee Mountain HMA can be found 90 miles northwest of Winnemucca, NV, bordered on the north and west by the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. 

Monitor Wild Horse Territory
​
Size: 380,000 acres
Number of wild horses the Forest Service deems appropriate for the herd area is unknown

​Located in Nevada approximately 15 miles east of Tonopah in the southern half of the Monitor Mountain Range.

Monte Cristo Wild Horse Territory
​
Size: 71,680 acres of National Forest land and 366,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management land
Number of wild horses the Forest Service and BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 236

​Located in Nevada approximately 30 miles west of Ely. The territory lies on the west slopes and foothills of the White Pine Mountain Range. Read more here. 

Montgomery Pass HMA
​
Size: 50,815 acres
Number of wild burros the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 64-81

​The Montgomery Pass HMA is on the California border, west of Hwy 95 and south of the Hwy 6 junction near the Palmetto and Paymaster HMAs

Montezuma Peak HMA
​
Size: 77,876 acres
Number of wild horses and burros the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is zero. This herd area was zeroed out in 1996 but BLM states a few wild horses and burros remain. The list the horses at 2-4 and the burros at 6-10.

​The McGee Mountain HMA can be found west of Goldfield, NV.

Muddy Mountains HMA
​
Size: 78,705 acres
Number of wild burros the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 50

​The Muddy Mountains HMA can be found 40 miles east of Las Vegas, NV. This herd is jointly managed by the NPS.

Nevada Wild Horse Range HMA
​
Size: 1,301,637 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 300-500 

​The Nevada Wild Horse Range HMA is off-limits to the public as it is contained within the Nellis Air Force Range. ​

New Pass-Ravenswood HMA
​
Size: 285,878 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 340-566. BLM states there are some curlies within the herd.

​The McGee Mountain HMA can be found 35 miles northwest of Austin, NV, in Lander county.

North Monitor HMA
​
Size: 11,512 acres
Number of wild horses or burros (it is not specified) the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 6-8

​The North Monitor HMA is in the Battle Mountain District in central Nevada, south of Hwy 50 and east of the Fish Creek HMA.

North Stillwater HMA
​
Size: 178,927 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 138-205

​The North Stillwater HMA is within the Stillwater Mountain Range, southeast of I-80 and north of Hwy 50 in central west Nevada. It is near the Tobin Range and Augusta Mountains HMAs.

Northumberland Wild Horse Territory
​
Size: 12,800 acres
Number of wild horses the Forest Service deems appropriate for the herd area is unknown

​Located in Nevada approximately 40 miles southeast of Austin in the central part of the Toquima Mountain Range. Read more here. 

Nut Mountain Herd Management Area
​
Size: unknown
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is unknown
Located in northwest Nevada, northern Washoe County, NV approximately 40 miles east of Cedarville, CA. South of the Bitner HMA, north of the High Rock HMA, and west of the Wall Canyon HMA.

Owyhee HMA
​
Size: 339,103 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 139-231

​The Owyhee HMA Complex is in north central Nevada on the Idaho border, north of I-80 and east of Hwy 95. This HMA is part of the Owyhee Complex which also includes the Little Owyhee, Little Humboldt, Rock Creek, and Snowstorm HMAs.

Palmetto HMA
​
Size: 118,273 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 46-76 though the 2023 population count is just 25. BLM states they don't know why the population has diminished; it could either be natural predation or they have migrated to a nearby herd area.

​The Palmetto HMA is north and west of the town of Lida, NV in Esmeralda county. It is west of Hwy 95 near the California border, adjacent to the Silver Peak and Montezuma Peak HMAs.

Pancake HMA Complex
​
Size: 849,922 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 240-493

​The Pancake HMA Complex is 30 miles west of Ely, NV or 80 miles northeast of Tonopah, in White Pine and Nye counties. The complex consists of Sands Springs West, Jakes Wash HA (herd area), and the Monte Cristo Wild Horse Territory. Jakes Wash and Monte Cristo are both considered zeroed out of horses. 

Paradise Peak Wild Horse Territory

Size: 14,700 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 240-493

​Located in Nevada approximately 60 miles northwest of Tonopah in the southeast portion of the Paradise Mountain Range. Read more here. 

Paymaster HMA
​
Size: 100,590 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 23-38

​The Paymaster HMA is 10 miles west of Tonopah, NV. According to BLM, 2/3rds of the habitat is for bighorn sheep and the horses can only be found in a small portion of the area. 

Pilot Mountain HMA
​
Size: 477,133 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 249-415

​The Pilot Mountain HMA is near the junction for Hwy 95 and Hwy 6 in southwest Nevada. Nearby HMAs include Paymaster, Silver Peak, and Garfield Flat. 

Pine Nut Mountains HMA
​
Size: 104,316 acres
Number of wild horses the BLM deems appropriate for the herd area is 118-179
​The Pine Nut Mountains HMA (formerly known as Nut Mountain) is east/northeast of Minden, NV. The BLM lists the wrong location on their website as the herd has been pushed way south of the original herd area. Take Hwy 395 to Minden, head east into the foothills east of East Valley Rd and east/northeast of Fish Springs Rd. This herd is often found within the ever expanding neighborhood and you will see water troughs that volunteers keep full. The main roads are not too bad, though they are dirt/gravel and there are many smaller roads/two-tracks that you can take with a truck and good tires.  

Red Rock HMA

Size: 161,969 acres

Saulsbury HMA

Seven Mile HMA

​The Snow Storm Mountains HMA is 45 miles northeast of Winnemucca, NV. BLM states that the wild horses tend to stay away from the western portion of the HMA near the Twin Peaks mine, which contains significant mining  and exploration activity.

South Shoshone HMA

​The South Shoshone HMA is 30 miles south of Battle Mountain, NV in Lander County. BLM states they believe the wild horse move between this HMA and the nearby Callaghan and Bald Mountain HMAs.
