Return to Finding Wild Horses here for tips on visiting the range and to find herds in other areas
Theodore Roosevelt National Park Wild Horses
Size: 46,158 acres in the south unit of the park
Number of wild horses the Park Service deems appropriate for the herd area is 35-60 though the population is much higher than that right now. The National Park Service is planning to remove the herd entirely. Please follow www.chwha.org for more information on that plan and how you can help.

TRNP has two units: the south unit is near the town of Medora off Interstate 94 and the north unit is 50 miles north on Highway 85. The wild horse herd is found only in the southern unit. Because it is a national park, nearly all of the roads are paved and suitable for any vehicle. There is one dirt road also suitable for any vehicle.
You can see the wild horses living peacefully alongside bison, prairie dogs, and more, anywhere throughout the south unit of the park. The scenery is gorgeous.
You will need a National Park Pass which can be purchased at the gate to the park.
