Finding Wild Burros in South Dakota

Return to Finding Wild Horses here for tips on visiting the range and to find herds in other states
A herd of wild burros can be found in Custer State Park, just 15 miles east of the town of Custer
Custer State Park Wild Burros
Size: 71,000 acres in the south unit of the park

To reach Custer State Park take US Hwy 16 east from the town of Custer.  You will need to purchase a Day Pass to get into the park and it is $20 for 1-7 days.  There is a loop you can drive that is a paved/gravel road suitable for all vehicles.  The burros can be found at the south and southeast end of the loop; you'll drive over a cattle and through a fence line.

This herd is the one exception to feeding wild horses and burros - you are welcome to take a bag of carrots with you and the burros will love you for it!

Custer State Park is also home to a large herd of bison, prairie dog towns, and other wildlife.  It is also close to Wind Cave National Park, Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave National Monument, the Iron Mountain Road, and so much more.  The entire area is worth staying in for a few days or more.
