To reach Custer State Park take US Hwy 16 east from the town of Custer. You will need to purchase a Day Pass to get into the park and it is $20 for 1-7 days. There is a loop you can drive that is a paved/gravel road suitable for all vehicles. The burros can be found at the south and southeast end of the loop; you'll drive over a cattle and through a fence line.
This herd is the one exception to feeding wild burros - you are welcome to take a bag of carrots with you and the burros will love you for it!
Custer State Park is also home to a large herd of bison, prairie dog towns, and other wildlife. It is also close to Wind Cave National Park, Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave National Monument, the Iron Mountain Road, and so much more. The entire area is worth staying in for a few days or more.
