2024 Wild Horse and Burro Roundup Updates:
An updated version of the FY24 Roundup Schedule was released on August 28, 2024:
On December 8, 2023 the Bureau of Land Management released the FY24 Tentative 'Gather' schedule and they plan to remove another 20,000 wild horses and burros from our public lands in 2024. The 'Gather' Schedule has been revised a few times this year. See the numbers in the graphic above or the link below for the most current HMAs on the roundup schedule.
The tentative FY2024 August 28th updated roundup schedule can be found here:
www.blm.gov/sites/default/files/docs/2024-08/Tentative%20National%202024%20%20Gather%20Sched.%20Revised%20Aug%2031%2C%202024.pdf
• BLM is going after the incredibly unique Sulpher HMA wild horses again. This herd was just rounded up in 2022 and 382 wild horses were permanently removed.
• BLM went after the White Mountain HMA herd again. Hundreds were removed as part of the Wyoming Checkerboard roundup just 2 years ago. BLM's plan is to remove 586 wild horses this year and they accomplished that in one week in August 2024.
• For the first time in 10 years, the wild horses of McCullough Peaks were rounded up. Why? Because the BLM DC office wanted a bait & trap roundup in WY and McCullough Peaks is the only herd they do that with.
40 McCullough Peaks wild horses were removed and this was devastating to family bands. A healthy herd needs 150 adults to be genetically viable.
Wild horses need our voices now more than ever.

North Lander Complex in Wyoming - remov2,577 of the planned 2,766 wild horses, possibly returning 40 that would include gelded stallions and mares treated with both IUD's and the sterility drug GonaCon - no horses released as of Sept 4th.
• BLM attempted to zero out entire herds in the North Lander Complex including in the Conant Creek, Dishpan Butte, and Rock Creek HMAs. Now they are working on the Muskrat Basin HMA, where over half of the BLM's goal of 2700+ horses will come from. In one area of the Dishpan Butte HMA, they left just 1-2 stallions and removed the rest.
• The North Lander Complex includes 4 herd management areas: Conant Creek, Dishpan Butte, Rock Creek, and Muskrat Basin totaling more than 375,000 acres. BLM only allows 320 - 536 wild horses in the area.
• $613,575.00 in taxpayer dollars is being paid to Cattoor Livestock Roundup Inc for this roundup
• thousands of sheep and cattle currently graze in the herd area while wild horses are being removed
• Pregnant mares and newborn foals are present in the herds; BLM is ignoring their own guidelines of not performing roundups during foaling season
• BLM refuses to implement a yearly fertility control program on these herds, rather choosing to use sterility measures including gelding of stallions, IUD's placed in mares, and the use of the sterilant GonaCon when returning captured horses to the range.

Wild horses need our voices! Please call, write, and email your US Representative and both US Senators today and say:
'I am calling (or writing) today to ask (Representative or Senator) _______________________ for an immediate moratorium on all wild horse and burro roundups until Congress can investigate the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars, lack of transparency with Congress and the American public, violations of the Comprehensive Animal Welfare Program (CAWP), and massive mismanagement of the Wild Horse and Burro Program. We want wild horses and burros preserved in the American West on the land that was principally set aside for them under the Wild and Free-Roaming Horse & Burro Act of 1971. The BLM is set on systematically exterminating our treasured wild horses and burros. This is an urgent, time sensitive matter as the BLM is presently chasing wild horses and burros with helicopters, causing countless deaths of these treasured animals, and zeroing out additional wild horse herds in Wyoming.'
ALL American taxpayers are footing the bill for wild horse and burro roundups no matter what state you live in. ALL members of Congress should be concerned, no matter the state you live in. Congress provides the budget to the Bureau of Land Management. You have every right to be concerned and ask your US Representative and both US Senators to get involved.
